President Putin says that the collapse of the Soviet Union has made Russians “the largest divided people in the world”. Is that a precursor to further adventures to unite, for example, the people of Transdnistria to the Russian Federation?

One fall out from Putin’s military charge is that regions are being discovered that most of us have never heard of before. Not even my Hungarian colleague had heard of Transdnistria, a breakaway state from Moldova.

Alternatively after building up the anxiety and tension is it a precursor to taking a step back, reducing the state of readiness of troops on the Eastern Ukraine border and then bathing in the gratitude of a grateful world that a war has been avoided. The Crimean events could then be reinterpreted as an intervention Russia had to pursue because of the illegal overthrow of the government in Kiev.
