Turning Points

Published Tuesday, August 26th, 2014

Not a week goes by that is not momentous for one reason or another. On the financial front last week the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee ended its longest period of unanimity in the committee’s history with two out of nine members calling for an interest rate hike for the first time since 2011. On the war front Israeli/Palestinian hostilities resumed, the Russia/Ukraine confrontation over humanitarian aid lorries developed in the words of President Obama into “a dangerous escalation of tension” and a US journalist was beheaded by ISIS.

The awful last event could be a major turning point which triggers a much heavier US intervention in Iraq and Syria and unites western public opinion against the Islamic State in support of those arguing that it must be dealt with urgently. Nobody can pretend that there is a diplomatic solution. The death of 3 senior Hamas commanders may also be a turning point in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
