A dearth of economic reports made for a muted session across most assets classes yesterday with global equity bourses in particular struggling for traction and ending the day marginally lower. The little that was available for traders to digest included an ECB survey highlighting an improvement in lending conditions to private-sector companies during the last quarter.

This confirmation that the ECB’s liquidity injection is trickling down to the real economy has dashed hopes that it would hint at an expansion of its QE programme at tomorrow’s policy meeting in what will surely be another non-event. Over in the US, corporate earnings once again took centre stage as disappointing results from IBM lead Wall St into negative territory with encouraging US housing figures failing to lift sentiment.
